O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the third Canadian Idol season. The judges loved her voice and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil had received high praise from the judges. She suffered significant defeats during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. Judges were shocked at this, and instructed the crowd to select contestants such as Melissa, who had most impressive singing talent. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once ever again. O'Neil's performance on the 7th of September, 2005 was so impressive that judge Werner predicted the newspaper headlines. O'Neil beat Rex Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol. O'Neil's Canadian Idol triumph was declared by the Premier Paul Martin immediately.
