O'Grady is the daughter of Jim O'Grady and Jan O'Grady. Jim O'Grady works as financial advisor. Her family lived in Wheaton and was a student at Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. She appeared in a few commercials prior to making the move into Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials for Montgomery Ward. She was a part of the romantic comedy film called She's Having a Baby. She was later a regular in the ABC Drama China Beach with Dana Delany. The other appearances she made on the guest list included programs for TV as well as independent films, among numerous others. Donna Abandando, her first major role in the ABC detective show NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady, who played the long-haired, secretariat character from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actress. In 1995, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in a Drama Series along with the cast.
